The order will establish a national language for the first time in the nation’s 250 year history.
“Trump’s order would also rescind former President Bill Clinton’s August 2000 directive requiring agencies and other recipients of federal funds to provide services for those with limited English proficiency,” reports CNBC. “Trump’s designation will allow federal agencies to maintain their current policies and continue to provide documents and services in other languages. But it ‘encourages new Americans to adopt a national language that opens doors to greater opportunities.’”
Many online are celebrating the move.

Our founding documents are written in English. Language unites us. If you immigrate to the United States, you must assimilate to us, not the other way.

English competency should be required for citizenship.
Voting forms should only be in English.
I’ve seen jurors get court assigned translators. That is not a jury of peers.

America is not just an abstract "idea." It is a nation and a people, with our own distinct history, heritage, culture and language.
In this country, we speak English.
It's about time our laws reflected that. pic.twitter.com/pzQjNQ7afj
The Wall Street Journal was first to report the incoming order Friday morning, saying that the move outlines a need for unity, efficiency and civic engagement.
