Italy’s Giorgia Meloni responded cautiously Wednesday to a US-Russian accord on a ceasefire on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, but expressed her faith in Donald Trump’s negotiating efforts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in a call with his US counterpart Tuesday to halt attacks against Ukrainian energy targets for 30 days, but refused a full ceasefire unless the West halts all military aid for Kyiv.

The proposed ceasefire on strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure would be “a very first opening that goes in the direction of what was agreed before between Donald Trump and (Ukrainian) President Volodymyr Zelensky”, Meloni told lawmakers.

She added: “We support the efforts of President Trump, from my point of view he’s a strong leader who can certainly set the conditions to guarantee a just and lasting peace.”

Meloni, whose hard-right government has strongly backed Kyiv in its war with Russia, stressed again the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine.

She has proposed something along the model of NATO’s Article 5 provision, where an attack on one member is considered an attack against all.

Kyiv’s allies could agreed to provide “assistance”, but this would not necessarily involve force, she explained to the Senate on Tuesday.
