MTG Quits Congress Following Bitter Fallout With Trump

Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a loyal ally to Donald Trump, has announced her resignation from Congress after a bitter and very public falling out with the President.

In a statement published days after Trump called her a “traitor”, the 51-year-old Republican congresswoman said she would “refuse to be a battered wife” to the US president after he “tried to destroy” her.

“I refuse to be a battered wife, hoping t all goes away and gets better,” MTG said in a lengthy video posted to her X account on Friday evening.

Trump called Ms Greene’s resignation “great news for the country”. Her last day in office will be January 5, 2026

MSN reports: A self-professed outsider who never believed she “fit in” to the Washington establishment, Ms Greene claimed she had been “cast aside by the president and the Maga political machine” along with the “common Americans” in her constituency.

Ms Greene said her last day in office would be January 5 next year.

A source told CNN that Ms Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th district in the US House of Representatives, had considered resigning for the past week following the feud with Mr Trump.

The former Trump loyalist said she had decided to leave to avoid a “hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president that we all fought for”, adding that the Republican party was likely to lose the midterm elections in 2026.

Ms Greene was elected to Congress in 2020 and for five years was one of the US president’s strongest backers, defending him through numerous scandals and enduring what she characterised as “never-ending personal attacks” from her opponents.

However, in recent weeks the Make America Great Again (Maga) firebrand had clashed with Mr Trump on issues such as immigration and America’s involvement in foreign wars.

Ms Greene argued the US president had broken his campaign promises to reduce migration and focus on domestic policy.

She also became increasingly critical of Mr Trump’s handling of the longest US government shutdown in history and his reluctance over releasing files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

As the US president continued to call the files a “Democrat hoax”, Ms Greene remained a thorn in his side.

Mr Trump signed a bill this week to release the documents after it passed the House and Senate with overwhelming support.

However, she previously joined Epstein’s victims, on multiple occasions, in demanding for the documents to be published.

Mr Trump then announced he would no longer support Ms Greene, calling her a “ranting lunatic” while declaring he would back primary challengers against her for the midterm elections.

Over the next several days he continued on the attack, calling her a “traitor” and a “disgrace”. Ms Greene hit back, accusing the man she once loyally defended of inciting death threats against her.

“Loyalty should be a two-way street,” she said in the video announcing her resignation.

“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, who I fought for.”
