Local officials said that a Frenchman discovered a $800,000 gold treasure while digging a swimming pool in his garden earlier this year.

AFP reports: After making the discovery in May, the man informed the local authorities, who allowed him to keep the gold since it did not come from an archaeological site, according to the council in the eastern town of Neuville-sur-Saône on Wednesday.
According to local newspaper Le Progres, he found "five gold bars and many coins" buried in plastic bags.
Police determined that the gold had been legally acquired and melted down at a nearby refinery “15 or 20 years ago.”
The town hall said the previous owner of the garden had died, and how the gold ended up there remains a mystery.
