The EU executive said Thursday it had asked the bloc’s anti-fraud agency to “look into” whether Peter Mandelson violated rules for European Union commissioners, after the release of documents showing his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The European Commission made the request to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) “given the circumstances, and the significant amount of documents made available publicly”, a spokesman for the executive said.
Brussels wants to investigate whether the high-profile British politician breached the code of conduct for current and former commissioners. Mandelson was commissioner between 2004 and 2008.
