Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that any territorial compromise in peace negotiations with Russia can only happen if approved by the Ukrainian people through a referendum or elections. Speaking amid intensifying US-led diplomatic efforts to end the nearly four-year war, Zelensky emphasized: “The people of Ukraine will answer this question.” This position reinforces Ukraine’s commitment to democratic legitimacy on the most sensitive issues of the conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that any potential compromise on territory should be decided by a popular vote, as US-led diplomatic efforts to settle the nearly four-year war with Russia intensify.
“I believe that the people of Ukraine will answer this question. Whether through elections or a referendum, there must be a position from the people of Ukraine,” he told journalists, including AFP, at a briefing.
